In late August I had the privilege to present to a community of people interested in understanding more about pain in Busselton, a rural city in Australia’s beautiful South West. This event rounded off a ‘Giving Back’ tour that saw me present in Kununurra and Broome (via zoom after an accidental flooded car – a story for another day). In Busselton I was joined by a local GP, a psychologist and a physiotherapist for a panel discussion following the presentation. The audience consisted of people with a lived experience of pain and a variety of local health professionals passionate about contemporary pain care.

Nestled in a cosy setting with great local food and wine, we discussed the 10 scientific facts about back pain based on a paper we published in the prestigious British Journal of Sports Medicine (http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bjsports-2019-101611). Snippets from the ‘Empowered Beyond Pain’ podcast that I produce and co-host with Professor Peter O’Sullivan and Dr JP Caneiro provided great discussion points. We have a real emphasis on having patient stories and voices on the podcast, as well as world-renowned researchers, so it was heartening to hear that the audience connected well with these stories. The audiences also saw a 35% improvement in low back pain understanding based on a pre-post Back Pain Attitudes Questionnaire – how fantastic! A special thanks to Abbie Norrish and Mieke Boerema for organising!
